As physics has taught many a student, the greater the mass of an object, the larger a force is required to make it move or yield. When it comes to roadway accidents, it is often the vehicle with greater mass that comes out ahead, all things being equal that is. Still, at highway speeds, even a small vehicle can put quite a dent into a larger, more massive one, though the passengers will not necessarily fare any better either way. As Maryland personal injury attorneys, I and my colleagues are always ready to help the victims of car, truck and motorcycle collisions.
Whether one is injured during a traffic collision in or near Gaithersburg, Rockville, Annapolis or the District of Columbia, the range of injuries can be just as varied as the venue in which it occurs. Although the details of each commercial trucking accident or passenger car wreck are always different, the seriousness of various accidents can cause extensive injuries and require numerous medical treatments and a variety of rehabilitative procedures before a victim is back to a relatively normal life.
For those not as lucky, the families of deceased victims can sue to recoup hospital and other costs, such as the victim’s lost wages, as well as the loss of that person’s companionship. Punitive awards can also come in the wake of a wrongful death lawsuit filed by a victim’s estate as well.
Of course, when a highway accident involves a large commercial vehicle, such as an 18-wheeler, construction vehicle, or large charter bus, the people who may be occupying a passenger car hit by that vehicle could suffer serious or fatal injuries. Speed and circumstances play a large part in the fate of victims caught up in such typically horrendous collisions.
Not long ago, actress and celebrity Lindsay Lohan was reportedly involved in a roadway collision along a stretch of the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH). Based on news reports at that time, Lohan was not seriously injured, however her personal assistant — and the only other occupant in the vehicle — was sent to the local emergency room following the wreck. According to police reports and other sources, Lohan’s vehicle apparently crashed into what authorities described as a large dump truck.
Based on those reports, the 25-year-old star was behind the wheel of an $80K Porsche, with her assistant in the passenger seat, on a Friday afternoon when the traffic accident occurred. News articles claim that the star apparently denied responsibility for the accident, stating that commercial vehicle in effect cut her off before her car ended up colliding with the truck.
News reports mentioned that Lohan was on her way to the set of an upcoming movie about the life and times of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton to air on the Lifetime network in the near future. While a press release mentioned that Lohan was taken to the hospital as a precaution, there was no mention as to the condition of her assistant. The only indication was a statement that nobody was seriously injured in the accident.
From photos, it appeared as if the car itself was serious damaged. Police were said to be continuing the accident investigation at the time of the news articles.
