Earlier this month in Frederick County, two dump trucks working for the same company got into a head-on collision, injuring both drivers. According to a report by WUSA9, the accident occurred just after noon on Elmer Derr Road, near East Mount Zion Road.
Evidently, both of the trucks were owned by a concrete company based in Gaithersburg, Maryland. At some point, the truck heading westbound drifted across the center median and slammed into the eastbound truck. There was no indication that either of the drivers was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the accident.
Both drivers were injured in the accident. One of them was taken by ambulance to FMH, and the other was flown by helicopter to the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore. It seems as though both drivers will make a full recovery.
Distracted Truck Drivers Can Cause Serious Accidents
The report above noted that there was no indication that drugs or alcohol were involved in the truck accident. However, this kind of accident does not happen for no reason. For some reason, the westbound truck driver took his eyes of the road and began to drift, causing a serious accident.
Distracted driving is something that most of us are probably guilty of from time to time. Whether it be talking to a passenger, reading a billboard, or fiddling with the radio, most of us have occasion at times to take our eyes off the road. However, professional drivers who operate heavy machinery for a living should pay closer attention.
Head-On Collisions in Maryland
Head-on collisions involving a semi-truck or any other large vehicle can cause enormous amounts of damage and have the potential to cause serious injury or death. It is very lucky that neither of the two drivers in this accident suffered life-threatening injures as a result of the accident. However, that will not always be the case.
Due to the sheer mass of semi-trucks, other vehicles that collide with them are often completely destroyed. Essentially, getting into a head-on collision is like running into a brick wall at top speed. And in some cases, a smaller car will even get stuck underneath a huge truck, trapping the occupants inside. If you have been involved in a Maryland truck accident, consult with a dedicated attorney to see what options you may have.
